Byrd and others on a secret surveying mission of the South Pacific to identify potential airfield and fueling sites for the US military in the war with Japan. The cruiser visited Tahiti, the Pitcairn Islands; Galapagos Islands, Marquesas Islands, Leeward Islands (Bora Bora) and the Easter Islands during September through December 1943.
Sylvester Kuhn also has a Honolulu Memorial Plaque.
