Son of Laney and Elberta Thames. He served as a Sergeant 1st Class in the U.S. Army, receiving a Purple Heart during the Korean Conflict. At the age of 27, he became a deacon at Grace Baptist Church for many years before joining Parkview Baptist Church. He worked at Bernard and Burk Engineering, and later for Eye Care Surgery Center following retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ida Fay (Russell) Thames; parents-in-law, Howard and Grace Russell; sisters, Frances Pullen and her husband, Ted Pullen, and Vela Thames; sister-in-law, Helen Russell; and brother-in-law, Roger Rome. He leaves his children, Michael L Thames (Ann), Donna F Booth (Harrell), Jerry D Thames (Jill), Dianne D Huckeba (Gary); sister-in-law Margrette Rome; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
