San Jose Daily Mercury, March 22, 1899. "County Auditor A. L. Veuve died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of his brother, William P. Veuve, at Los Gatos. He had been ill for a number of weeks, suffering greatly with bronchitis, and went to Los Gatos with the hope that the change of air would prove beneficial. While there his condition was critical on several occasions, but these were followed by favorable conditions till the change came that resulted fatally yesterday afternoon. The throat troubles were aggravated with an attack of grip, and finally the lungs became seriously affected, which made recovery impossible. The deceased was a native of San Jose. He was born in this city on January 13, 1855. The foundation of his education was laid in the public schools in San Jose, and subsequently he attended the Santa Clara College and became a graduate of that institution. A genial personality won for Mr. Veuve a host of staunch friends, who greatly deplore his death, and extend to the bereaved relatives the warmest sympathy. During his life career in this city the deceased, in a number of positions of great responsibility, showed remarkable ability and success as an accountant. He first served as a bookkeeper for tho City Store, and subsequently became the manager of the Pacific Manufacturing Company at Santa Clara. Afterward, till that corporation suspended business, Mr. Veuve served as the manager of the Shasta Lumber Company. For four years Mr. Veuve filled the position of License Collector under County Tax Collector January, and at the last county election he was the successful candidate upon the Democratic and Good Government tickets for County Auditor. He began his duties under the most favorable auspices, when he was stricken down with the fatal illness. Twenty years ago Mr. Veuve married Miss Jennie Cahill, and she survives him with four children. Eugenie, aged 17; Marguerita, aged 15; Al. Jr., aged 13, and Hippolite, aged 11 years. There also are two surviving brothers and a sister, William P. and H. H. Veuve, and Mrs. Mary Hoffman. The deceased was a member of Palo Alto Parlor of Native Sons and of the Young Men's Institute. The funeral will take place from the family residence in this city on Thursday."
