Graduating from Stanton High School in 1962, Dave worked for a while on his father's farm. After he left the farm he was employed in Omaha for a few years as a mechanic with a couple of different automobile dealerships. Those positions led to employment as a school bus mechanic with Omaha Public Schools. He was in that position for most of his working years. He retired from it at the age of 62.

As a young man he did some drag racing for a number of years, first with Ronnie and later with his life-long friend, Jim. He remained an avid fan of drag racing all of his life. During his retirement years he traveled nationwide to spectate at various races around the country. He said he had been to every state except Alaska and Hawaii. These trips also included visits to various family members ranging from California to Florida. He was always interested in keeping up with his nephews and their families. As recently as the winter of 2019 he spent three months on the road taking in races, the sights in our beautiful country, and making stopovers to see family including then two-year old Tristan Bolz in North Carolina. These trips were spontaneous in nature and he often he made it up on the fly. My daughter-in-law told how once when he was visiting them in Tennessee he left the house one morning stating that he was going out for coffee. He was gone all day and when he finally checked in she asked where he was. The answer, "in Pennsylvania". His friend, Jim, had a similar story where he called in from Florida with the stated intention of being there for a day or so but the next day he was calling in from Massachusetts.

His side hustle in retirement was collecting and selling scrap metal. My son tells me there are barrels of it in his garage right now that have not been sold yet.

He was the caretaker for his father and also his brother Steven in their last years and he did it with grace.

I will miss his friendship, his phone calls, and his presence at family gatherings. He was a good man.
