Perished on 25 Oct 1918, when the Canadian Steamship, SS Princess Sophia, grounded on Vantreight Rock in the Lynn Canal, in the middle of a violent winter blizzard. The captain decided the ship would lift it self off the rocks at high tide. Unfortunately, the winds increased and, when the tide rose, the ship got stuck and the winds tore it off the reef, causing a huge hole in the hull. Massive amounts of fuel also spilled and the temperature of the water was around 2 degrees C - just below freezing. The ship sank within minutes and all 346 people aboad the SS Princess Sophia died before rescue boats could reach them.Mr. Ironside was 39 years old at the time of his death. A native of Ontario, Ironside had come to the Yukon in 1898 and was a life long batchelor. He is buried beside his mother who also perished in the sinking of the Princess Sophia.
