Irene E. Kono, age 89, a resident of Two Rivers, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

Irene was born on June 2, 1924, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late William and Julia (née Chudina) Bartels. She graduated high school as valdictorian in Scranton. On February 16, 1946 she married Lester A. Kono in Scranton. He preceded her in death on March 29, 1986.

Irene operated the Buffalo Inn with her husband and then later operated Kono's Bar with her son, Robert. She loved crocheting, traveling, doing crossword puzzles, playing solitaire and telling her grandchildren stories. Irene was a former member of St. Mark Catholic Church of Two Rivers.

Survivors include her children and their spouses: Julia (Don) Brooks of Two Rivers, and Robert (Darlene) Kono, Mary (Mike) Malek, John (Eileen) Kono, all of Manitowoc, Barbara DIstasio (special friend Cass) of Aventura, Florida; two daughters-in-law: Linda Kono of Two Rivers, Lynn Kono of Sheboygan; 15 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one sister: Julia Coates, West Orange, New Jersey; two sisters-in-law: Ella Grotegut, Cleveland, Angeline Hirsak, Kansas City. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

She was also preceded in death by two sons: Lester Kono Jr. and William Kono; three grandchildren: 7 brothers and 3 sisters.

Entombment will be at Knollwood Mausoleum, town of Kossuth.
