Shirley Lake Beebe, age 85 of Roxana, DE, passed away peacefully at home on November 1, 2021, with her children at her side. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Shirley was born in Wilmington, DE on January 6, 1936, the youngest child of Charles Lake and Mabel (Ebright) Lake and spent her childhood years in the Hockessin and Coopers Farm areas in New Castle County. Shirley graduated from Conrad High School and fulfilled her childhood dream by graduating from the Wilmington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. Her nursing career included stints at both Kent General Hospital and Memorial Hospital, as a Private Duty Nurse, and several years with Doctor Layton in Dover, DE.

Always a woman of uncommon drive, self-confidence, and persistence, Shirley first saw her future husband Donald's photo in her nursing school classmate's high school yearbook. Being told "Oh, you'll never get him," Shirley directed her to set up the blind date and soon Donald was driving the 150 mile round trip from Milford every weekend to date "that city girl"! They were married on May 23, 1958 and settled in Smyrna - moving to Clayton in 1961.

Some of Shirley's most satisfying professional years were spent after she was appointed the Director of Camp Barnes in 1973. Owned and operated by the Delaware Association of Chiefs of Police, and later by the Delaware State Police, Camp Barnes is a children's camp for deserving children, 4H, and other youth groups. It was created in 1949 and Shirley was actually a 13 year old camper there that very first year. After fifteen challenging and satisfying years, and having earned the praise and respect of a generation of campers, staff, and policemen, Shirley and Donald retired to their farm in nearby Roxana. Not in any way understanding the concept of retirement, and being the consummate multi-tasker that she was, Shirley jumped into a very active schedule, pursuing a wide variety of interests such as travel, refinishing antiques, and growing a huge garden, all the while making it her priority to provide innumerable hours of encouragement, love, and support to her children and seven grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Donald L Beebe. She is survived by her son David Randall Beebe and his wife Julie; her daughter Carolyn (Beebe) Buchler and her husband Brett; and her grandchildren: Daniel Scott Beebe, Keith Thomas Beebe, Baptiste Jean Robert, Abigail Fenwick Givens and her husband Aaron, Jacob Donald and his wife Taylor, Caleb Lake, and Sarah Rebekah.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at 11:00 AM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Clarksville Chapel, 34874 Atlantic Ave, Ocean View, DE, where friends and family may call beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at Roxana Cemetery, with everyone encouraged to come to share memories, tears, and laughter. If you knew Shirley, you know about her lists. True to form, the last one she left us says "everyone HAS to go!"

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, masks and social distancing are required by all persons attending or participating in any aspect of the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Roxana Volunteer Fire Company, 35943 Zion Church Road, Frankford, DE 19945.
