Richard was the son of a carpenter John Ellerbeck and Ann Clewsley. He also worked in construction and was a bricklayer's labourer in the 1901 census. In World War One he joined the Royal Marine Labour Corps, Soldier No. Deal/9007/S and earned the Victory & British War Medals. In 1918 at the time of his daughter's marriage he had the rank of Corporal.
On his death certificate, he was reported as being a builder's scaffolder.
