Alexander P. Ross was born in the Township of Cornwall on the 19th day of December 1831, a son of John Ross and his wife Sophia Carpenter, and was of U.E. Loyalist descent. He was a blacksmith and carriage maker, and successfully operated a large shop on First Street, Cornwall, a little west of Augustus Street. He was also interested in the lumber business for a time, did some contracting and accumulated considerable property. He married Elizabeth Caroline Clark in 1856 and their only child (Louisa Ann) became the wife of Dr. D.O. Alguire, one time M.P. for Stormont. Mr. Ross died in 1915, and was an elder of St. John's Presbyterian Church and a Conservative.

Alexander P. Ross was M.L.A. for Cornwall from 1883 to 1886.
