Son of George Washington Burhans and Caroline "Carrie" Elizabeth (Flagler) Burhans. He was also known by the alias Fred Pratt. He was a self-employed carpenter, and had lived in the Hollywood, California area for 20 years at the time of his death. He claimed to be a native of Canada, but was actually born in La Grange, New York. His obituary lists no survivors.

As Edwin F. Burhans, he married Bessie H. McKee on November 21, 1917 in Minot, North Dakota. Their newspaper wedding announcement stated Edwin had been living in Canada the previous eight years, however, he is shown in the City Directory of Kingston, New York in 1914, 1916 and 1918. By 1918, Edwin is living (alone) in Kingston, New York.

As "Fred Pratt," he married Alvina Kumpula on May 7, 1919 in Calumet, Michigan. They had three daughters: Anna Pratt, 1919-1926 (died of diphtheria); Ruth Caroline (Pratt) Impola, 1924-2008; and Virginia Myra (Pratt) Timonen, 1926-2013. All of the girls were born in Michigan.

By the 1930 US Federal Census, Edwin is "single" and living in Butte, Montana. That same year, Alvina is shown as married and living with her parents, but is a "widow" in the 1940 Federal Census.

In 1932, Edwin is a registered voter in San Francisco County, California. By 1940, he was living in Los Angeles County, California.
