George Franklin Abernathy, Jr., 76, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, March 10, 2002.

A native of Spartanburg; son of the late George Franklin Abernathy, Sr. (1886–1950) and Effie Blanche Hines Abernathy (1888–1944); husband of Dorothy Lucille Cunningham Abernathy (1921–2010).

Retired from the Odom Law Firm in 1990; employed by Spartanburg County Voter Registration; a graduate of Spartanburg High School, the University of South Carolina, and the USC School of Law; a member of Cudd Memorial Baptist Church; a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II; and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Army Reserves.

Survivors include his daughters, Jane A. Dickerson and Mary A. Timmons; brother, Warren Henry Abernathy (1923-2009); sister, Mary Sue Abernathy Witherspoon (1920-2002); three grandchildren; and one step-grandson.

Also predeceased by siblings, Ruby Beatrice Abernathy Simms (1911–1993), Jennie Blanche Abernathy Creech (1915-1990), Horace Hines Abernathy (1913–1965), Joseph Charles Abernathy (1918–1991), William Glenn "Billy" Abernathy (1928-1992), and Betty Jane Abernathy Israel (1929–1988).

Visitation was held from 7:00 - 9:00 pm, Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Memorials could be made to Cudd Memorial Baptist Church, The Soup Kitchen, c/o Second Presbyterian Church; or Interim Hospice, Spartanburg, SC.
