Lewis passed away peacefully on Monday, June 19, 2017 surrounded by loving family members. A special thank you to the dedicated, compassionate, and loving care teams at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.
Lewis worked on the family tobacco farm from youth to young man. He entered the military at age 21 and proudly served in the US Army for 21 years. He served one tour (13 months) in Korea and two tours (total of 24 months) in Vietnam. He also served in Germany for 9 years. He served 3 ½ years in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and 2 years in Fort Bragg.
After retiring from the Army, he worked another 18 ½ years for the NC Department of Correction, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the American Legion in Wendell, Post #148.
He loved his God and his church family, but closest to his heart was his own family. He is survived by his wife Helga of 59 years, his daughter Marlene (David), his son Michael (Lynne), grandchildren Megan, Kaitlyn, and Holly Ann Briggs, Brooke and Colton Sanders, and great-grandson, Kash Belanger. He is also survived by his brother, Edward (Jane) and five nieces.
