Born Abhas Kumar Ganguly , from a Bengali family, on August, 4, 1929, he was an Indian playback singer, Actor, director, producer, screenwriter, and lyricist. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of Indian music. He was one of the most popular singers in the Indian film industry and from soft numbers to peppy tracks to romantic moods, Kumar sang in different genres but some of his rare compositions which were considered classics were lost in time. Kumar's success came because his voice hit the microphone straight at its most sensitive point. At times, Mr. Kumar would utilize yodeling into his singing. A nod to a couple of his favorites, Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Morton.
While he had a lively and heart felt voice, he was a private man. A loner of sorts. He preferred doing a days filming, coming home, enjoying old movies and table tennis. Or driving. He was not a drinker, nor smoker. He said his addiction was tea.

He passed away of a heart attack on October, 13, 1987 in Bombay ( now Mumbai) and was cremated in his hometown of Khandwa.
He is truly one of the greatest singers and entertainers of all time.
