Ellen Godfrey Smith, born Stubberfield, was born in late summer in the State of New York, 6 September, 1841. She was the second of seven children born to George and Edna Booth Stubberfield, whom had five daughters, and two sons.
In her youth, Ellen traveled many places and moved several times, being born in New York, and living in Pennsylvania, and Ohio, before the Stubberfields settled in Michigan.
In 1861, Ellen married Edmond Elliott Smith, a farmer from Hillsdale, Michigan, who had also haled form Ohio. Shortly after their marriage, Edmond joined the Civil War effort.
Three of Edmond and Ellens' children were born during the time period of the Civil War - Isadora (1862-1941), Jesse Edmond (1863-1924), and Arminta Josephine (1864-1945).
Before the age of 30, the family had relocated out west. Baby Gertrude (1873-1902) was born in Iowa. The family soon moved on to Nebraska, ultimately to the Deer Creek area of Lincoln County, Nebraska. They homesteaded four or five miles Northwest of Moorefield, a tiny rural farm community in rough and undeveloped canyon country.
As Edmond got up in age, he sold his homestead. He died in early Spring, 5 April, 1908, at age 67, and is buried on the side of a grassy knoll on the old homestead near Moorefield, Nebraska. Ellen was 67 years old at the time of her husband's passing.
Some time after 1910, Ellen left Nebraska and headed South for Texas. She lived out her days there in the graceful green hills of Palestine, Anderson County Texas, with daughter Isadora Wright and family.
Ellen is buried with the Wright family at the Fort Houston Cemetery in Palestine, Texas.
