Deacon Watkins was a founding member of Community Baptist Church in Lawndale. He loved going to church where he served as a deacon and sang on the choir. He was employed with Dedmon Concrete for over 40 years and after retiring, he started his own business, Shorty and Sons. In addition to his love for his church, he also loved watching sports especially the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Lakers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Leila Pryor Watkins; two sons, Tommy Watkins and Rickey Watkins; brothers, Earnest Watkins, Robert Watkins and Brodus Watkins; one sister, Corine Miller and two grandsons, Travis Watkins and Ronald Hillman.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Shirley Wilson of Shelby, Bobby Watkins of Kings Mountain, NC, Diane Watkins of Lawndale, Patsy Watkins, Franklin Watkins and Stanley Eugene Watkins all of Shelby; two brothers, T, K. Watkins of Lawndale and Raymond Watkins of Gastonia, NC; four sisters, Majorie Schenck and Hattie Schenck both of Stanley, NC, Newzeland Ross of Charlotte, NC and Gladys Bines of Shelby; 14 grandchildren which includes Celeste Ruff, Ashley Bostic, Kierra Bostic, Rickey Watkins, Jr., Jeff Watkins who were raised in the home; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brothers-in-law, John Watson of Atlanta, GA and Robert L. Watson (Jeraldine) of Shelby; god-children, Mark Watkins and Jackie Hayes; best friends, Deacon James Littlejohn, Deacon Odell Leslie and Rev. Gene Pryor and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 29 , 2020 at 4:00 PM at Palmer Grove Baptist Church in Kingstown, NC . Burial will take place at the Community Baptist Church Cemetery in Lawndale.
