Longtime Alaska resident Mary Elmire Cox, 93, died Aug. 21, 1997, at her Chugiak residence.

A memorial service was at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at Firelake. Elder Michael Hook delivered the memorial talk. A graveside remembrance followed at the Valley Memorial Park cemetery.

Mrs. Cox was born Nov. 23, 1903, at Campbell, Mo.

"One of nine children, she learned early in life the importance of family values, hard work, and a strong faith," her family said. "These values saw her through the Depression and the years that followed."

In the mid-1920s, she met and married 'Bud' Cox. They moved to Alaska in 1956. Mrs. Cox, her husband and a son-in-law started Port-A-Can, the first portable sanitation service in Alaska. Mrs. Cox continued to operate Port-A-Can after her husband's death in 1973 until selling the business in the early 1980s.

Her family said, "In her later years, Mrs. Cox provided her family with guidance, strength, wisdom and resolve which will be forever cherished. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and reading. She was known as 'Cookie Grama' to her many great-grandchildren. To say she will be deeply missed would be an understatement."

"She was a beacon of light, always ready to listen and provide a safe haven to those in need. Her smile and gentle spirit will be forever in our hearts. She was truly, in every sense of the word, a loving, gentle lady."

Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; daughters, Bernice Gates in 1966 and Lynn Swan in 1973; and son, Gerald, in 1984.

She is survived by her daughters, Louise Crawford of Chugiak and Edyth Pagel of Flint, Mich.; brothers, Dutch Pennington of Mount Morris, Mich., and Chet Pennington of Santa Maria, Calif.; grandchildren and their spouses, James Crawford of Glendora, Calif., John Crawford of Los Angeles, Tammy Kirgis of Chugiak, Robin Denson of Portland, Ore., Lonnie McGowen of Anchorage, Gerald McGowen of Knik, Krystal McVeigh of Wasilla, Randy Cox of Stevensville, Mont., and Mike Cox of San Antonio. She also leaves her son-in-law, Pete Swan of Des Moines, Iowa., and 15 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

(Corrections to obituary - Her parents never did live in the town of Campbell MO but did live in Union Township of which Campbell is located. Edyth Pagel was not her daughter but was her sister.)
