Chico Record (Chico, California) 24 Jul 1928, Tuesday Page 1: War Veteran Dead At 85. Watis Bachelor, 85, veteran of Civil War, died Sunday night at the Light rooming house, where he has made his home for some time. He was a member of Halleck Post, G.A.R., and was veteran of Company B, 10th Regiment, of the Indiana Volunteer Cavalry. He has lived in Chico for a number of years.

He is survived by three sons, Joseph Bachelor of Red Bluff, and Albert and Louis Bachelor.

Funeral services, under the director of the Westfall Funeral Home, will be held a
t 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at the Broadway Methodist Church, the Rev. Thomas J. Carter, pastor of the church, officiating. The graveside services will be under the direction of Halleck Post, G.A.R., in the Chico cemetery.

Graves of 13 Civil War veterans were marked with appropriate tombstones yesterday when W.M. Bundy, adjutant of Halleck Post No. 19, Grand Army of the Republic, his son, Fred Gwinnup, and his grandson, George Gwinnup, placed the stones in the Grand Army plot in the Chico cemetery.

Mr. Bundy, as adjutant of the Chico post, supervised the work. The stones were furnished by the federal government and were sent to Chico from Boston.

Those whose graves were marked follow: George W. Tipton, R.B. Richards, D.M. Birdseye, John M. Irwin, C.C. Maltby, Samuel Baker, John Sauber, D.D. Cornick, Hugh W. Hughes, Watis Batchelor, Henry M. Stevens, Frank Popplewell and N.W. Henderson.
