Betty Jean Hill, 87, Ottawa, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, at the Ottawa Retirement Village, Ottawa.

Betty Jean Clark was born July 24, 1920, in Emporia, as the daughter of Mary Faye Gest Clark and Chalmers Clark.

Betty moved from Humboldt to Ottawa in 1935. Her father worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for more than 50 years becoming the agent at Ottawa Junction in 1935. Betty graduated from Ottawa High School in 1938 and then attended Emporia Teachers College and Ottawa University. She was employed by Carpenter Oil Co. for several years. During World War II, she served as Chief Rationing Clerk for Ottawa and Franklin County. She married Robert S. Hill on Nov. 27, 1944. After her husband was discharged from the Navy, she worked for the Kansas Power and Electric Company in Lawrence, while he attended law school.

Betty was very active in the Eastern Star Lodge No. 15 and was a member for more than 50 years. She also was a life member of Ottawa University's Women's Educational Society, a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Ottawa Country Club and a president of both the Women's Golf Association and Entre Nous. Betty also volunteered for several years with the Friends of the Ottawa Library.

She was interested in all sports, especially basketball, which she played while living in Humboldt. She liked swimming, and taught it in the late 1930s. Betty enjoyed playing golf and traveling, frequently spending winters in Arizona. Betty was a stay-at-home mom who enjoyed raising her three daughters. She was an excellent homemaker, a devoted wife and a gracious, beautiful lady. Her quiet manner belied her quick wit and excellent sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her family.

In addition to her husband, Robert, Betty also is survived by daughters Kathryn J. Hill-Bahner of St. Joseph, Mo., Martha A. Hill Underwood and husband, Douglas K. Underwood, of Lake Ozark, Mo., and son-in-law Philip C. Krug, husband of deceased daughter Glenda S. Hill Krug, Salina.

Also surviving are four grandchildren, Kristin L. Underwood Allan and husband, Kevin Allan, of Lake Ozark, Mo., Jane A. Underwood Dubbs and husband, Thomas Dubbs, of Osage Beach, Mo., Alexander R. Krug of New York City, N.Y., and Katherine H. Krug and fiancée, Ashley Jarvis, of Salina. Betty also was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Jackson W. Allan, Adrienne L. Dubbs, and Robert T. Dubbs. Other survivors include niece Dr. Connie Clark of Hutchinson, and numerous other nieces and nephews, children of Robert's sister, Imogene Hill Burnside. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Chalmers Clark, Jr., and her daughter, Glenda S. Hill Krug.
