LEROY -- A funeral for Melvin Erwin Duane Alden will be at 1 p.m. Monday at United Lutheran Church in Chester, Iowa, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial will be in Chester Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Alden, 81, of Chester, Iowa, whose daughter lives in LeRoy, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2007) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
He was born March 7, 1926. He had five brothers and five sisters. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and served in World War II as a Pearl Harbor experimental atomic bomb tester on the USS Nevada. His locations were Guam, Peleliu, Kwajalein, Bikini, Okinawa, Iwo Jima and the Marshall islands.
He received various medals, but his most treasured were for surrendering Kwajalein Island and an honor medal for World War II.
After working at John Deere and Raths in Waterloo, Iowa, he worked for Percy Ullom for 50 years.
He was baptized and confirmed in United Lutheran Church in Chester. He served on the church council for 50 years and served on the town council for 20 years. He belonged to Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. He was a member of the American Legion Post 161 for 53 years and the Lime Springs Legion for five years.
He married Shirley Mae Myli; she survives.
He was an avid hunter and fisher, and most treasured his time with his grandsons.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.
Survivors also include Shirley Diane (Tim) Fechner of LeRoy; two grandsons, Timothy D. of Decorah, Iowa, and Matthew D. of LeRoy; five sisters, Ethel (Marvin) Haley of Riceville, Iowa, Marilyn (Jim) Nettleton of Greene, Iowa, Darlene Griffin of Las Vegas, Frances (Robert) Wilson of Charles City, Iowa, and Bonnie (James) Hubka of Riceville, Iowa; and four brothers, Dwight of Nora Springs, Iowa, Darwin (Lois) of Charles City, Larry (Karen) of North Branch, Iowa, and Garry (Delores) of Milton-Free Water, Ore.
