An artisan. A silversmith and jeweler, in 1835 he partnered with Edmund Currier in the Salem jewelry company, Currier and Foster. He later moved to Boston and joined the jewelry firm of Harris, Stanwood and Co. Several of his pieces are exhibited in museums, including the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. In 1854, he was listed as active in the gas-fitting business and in 1865 he was manufacturing artificial legs. He was the son of John Foster, and married Catherine Elizabeth Duncan in Salem October 10, 1841.
