Ruth was an Oregon native and the youngest of six children. She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1977, then went on to earn a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Oregon. A creative spirit, she enjoyed quilting in addition to building design. She was also a fan of fantasy and a wide variety of science fiction, including Star Trek, Doctor Who, and the novels of Jim Butcher. She was an animal lover and had a succession of pet cats.
She is survived by her husband, an elder brother and sister, and many cousins and friends who will miss her thoughtful, gentle, and loving presence. The world is poorer in the wake of her departure.
