Jabez's parents were Charles (1801-1849) and Catherine (Carpenter) (1802-1897) Dibble who are buried in a small abandoned cemetery just north of Windsor, NY. The grandparents were Jonathan (1778-1851) and Hannah (Spencer) (1778-1845) Dibble who lived most of their lives in Schoharie Co., NY, Jonathan having come with his parents from Hillsdale in Columbia Co., NY. His father was Joseph Dibble (1754-1835), mother Abigail (Bigsbee) (1742-1827). Joseph was b. in Westport, CT. He, his brother Henry, Jr., and their father Henry, Sr. were Rev. War soldiers. Henry Sr. (1725-1804) and Abigail (Bulmore) (1721-1796) moved the family from East Hampton, Long Island, into interior Connecticut at a date uncertain. Beyond Henry is Joseph and 2 generations of Thomas Dibbles, who lived on Long Island. A 3rd Thomas lived in Windsor, CT and was one of the founders of that town. Before that he had lived with his father Robert in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony where they had settled upon their arrival from the west of England in 1634.

Jabez is on the 1850 census for NY, Broome, Windsor Twp., age 17, living with his parents. He next surfaces in Madison Co., IL joining the Army. He joined 25 Jun 1861 at Caseyville, IL, Private, age 36, 5'10", hair dark, eyes blue, complexion light, single, occupation "rail roader", nativity Schoharie Co., NY. He mustered in at Springfield 25 Jun 1861 and mustered out at the same place 7 Jul 1864. As his grave says, he did serve in Company B of the 22nd Illinois Infantry. A short history of his unit can be accessed through the Illinois State Archives online.

Jabez's brother David, a member of Co. K, 143 Regt. of NY Infantry, was killed at Peach Tree Ridge near Atlanta.

Jabez apparently returned to Windsor, NY after the war for he and Martha were married there in 1870. At some point they headed west. I have it from unofficial sources that I can't verify, but have no reason to doubt, that that they spent 1 year in St. Joseph, MO and 3 years in Jackson Co., KS from whence they moved to California. On 21 Aug 1877 Jabez registered to vote giving his residence as Cascade (in the hills above Oroville and Feather Falls) and occupation as Lumberman. The couple are on the 1880 census in Chico.
