George W. Hale, a resident of Nashville, Illinois enlisted as a private on August 27, 1861 and in Company D, Illinois 48th Infantry Regiment on October 15, 1861. Mustered out on May 30, 1865. Sources: Illinois: Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men, and, American Civil War Soldiers.

Applied for veterans benefits on May 9, 1892.

Chico Daily Record, Wednesday Morning, February 11, 1914, pg 5 col 2: Prominent G.A.R. Man Is Dead Of Bright's Disease. G.W. Hale, member of the Grand Army of the Republic and past commander of Halleck post, died at his home, 207 Eighth street, from Bright's disease shortly after 3:30 yesterday morning. Deceased was seventy-one years old last August.

Hale was a native of Illinois. He was a Chico pioneer, having been here for the last thirty years. He was a prominent member of the Grand Army and had many friends in Chico.

Deceased was a member of Company D, Forty-eighth regiment of Illinois.

He is survived by a widow, one daughter and three sons. Two daughters and two sons passed before him.

The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2:30 from the Engle Undertaking parlors on Broadway. Pall bearers will be members of the G.A.R. Interment will be made in the Chico cemetery.
