Samuel N Hostetler of Lawrence County, Indiana, enlisted as a private on July 18, 1864 in Company A, Indiana 24th Infantry Regiment. Mustered out on November 15, 1865. Sources: Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana.

He applied for veterans benefits while residing in Oregon on October 1, 1890.

S.N. Hostetter [sic], aged 73, born Indiana, occupation laborer, joined the Major General Henry W. Halleck Post No. 19, GAR, of Chico. Samuel Newton Hostetler, 84, a veteran of Sherman's march to the sea and a resident of Chico since 1865, died early Friday morning at his home, 4528 Twentieth Street. Death ended a marriage of 54 years, leaving as survivor the widow, Mrs. Amelia Hostetler.

A native of Mitchell, Ind., Mr. Hostetler joined the 24th Indiana Infantry for the rebellion and served with Sherman in the great Atlanta campaign that brought the war to a close. He was a member of Halleck Post No. 19 of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Other survivors are a son, A.N. Hostetler of Sacramento; three daughters, Mrs. May McGuffin of Chico, Mrs. Carrie Hilliard of Chico and Mrs. Seth Johnson of Sacramento; a stepson, Charles Gray of Chico; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the chapel of Westfall Funeral Home, the Rev. W.S. Lemmon of the Christian Church officiating. Interment will be in the Grand Army plot of Chico Cemetery, with graveside services conducted by Halleck Post.
