Veteran pension records indicate that Hugh W. Hughes was a member of three different units during the Civil War: His marker at Chico Cemetery indicates he was a member of Company H, 86th Ohio. He is also listed as a member of Company E 17 Michigan and Company E, 2nd Michigan.

Hugh Hughes, age 20, enlisted on February 14, 1862 in Company E, Michigan 17th Infantry Regiment Mustered out on 31 May 1865. He was transferred to Company E, Michigan 2nd Infantry Regiment on 31 May 1865. Mustered out on 28 Jul 1865 at Delaney House, Washington, DC. Chico Record (Chico, California) 17 May 1928, Thursday Page 1: Hugh W. Hughes Dies, Age 83. Hugh W. Hughes, a native of Maine [sic] County, Ohio, and a resident of Chico for 20 years, died yesterday morning at his home, Ninth and Laburnum streets, at the age of 83 years.

He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served as a private in Company E, Second Regiment, Michigan volunteers, and as a private in Company H, 86th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was a member of Halleck Post, G.A.R.

He leaves three children, Herman Hughes of Chico, Cal Hughes of Scott City, Kas., and Mrs. Velma Bean, Primeville, Ore.

The funeral will be held in the chapel of the West Funeral Home Saturday morning at 10 o’clock with the Rev. W.L. Mellinger officiating. The G.A.R. will take charge of the service at the graveside.

Chico Record (Chico, California) 12 Apr 1929, Friday Page 1: Graves of Chico Civil War Veterans Marked By Stones. Graves of 13 Civil War veterans were marked with appropriate tombstones yesterday when W.M. Bundy, adjutant of Halleck Post No. 19, Grand Army of the Republic, his son, Fred Gwinnup, and his grandson, George Gwinnup, placed the stones in the Grand Army plot in the Chico cemetery.

Mr. Bundy, as adjutant of the Chico post, supervised the work. The stones were furnished by the federal government and were sent to Chico from Boston.

Those whose graves were marked follow: George W. Tipton, R.B. Richards, D.M. Birdseye, John M. Irwin, C.C. Maltby, Samuel Baker, John Sauber, D.D. Cornick, Hugh W. Hughes, Watis Batchelor, Henry M. Stevens, Frank Popplewell and N.W. Henderson.
