Chico Enterprise, Tuesday, August 18, 1942, pg 1 col 3-4: "James McConnell, Second to Last G.A.R. Veteran, Dies. Chico members of the G.A.R. dwindled to one today with the death in the Yountville soldiers home of James F. McConnell, 93, who many times has been honored at patriotic services in Chico.

McConnell, who was a private in Capt. Edward Lemmers' Volunteers in the Civil War, died early this morning. Suffering from infirmities of old age, he left Chico last March and entered the Yountville Home. He enlisted August 13, 1864 and was discharged in Alexandria, Va., in 1965.

McConnell was a prominent member of the Halleck Relief Corps and with Chico's lone G.A.R. survivor, John Mullen, often had been feted by that organization.

The body will be brought to Chico for funeral services, arrangements for which will be made by the Black and Johnson funeral service.

For years McConnell had lived with John Whitaker, early day Indian fighter, on East Ninth Street, and was a familiar figure at all parades and patriotic occasions.

His last public appearance was in March 1941, when with Company G, Chico's National Guard unit, was inducted into the federal service. McConnell occupied a place of honor on the speaker's platform.

John Mullen, who is now over 96, was ill and unable to sit with him. Mullen resides at 1505 Oleander St. He is the only remaining veteran in Butte County, Col. Veach of Gridley, the third oldest, passing two years ago.
