Author. Born Johann Paul Friedrich Richter in Wunsiedel, Germany, he was a writer best known for his humorous poems, novels and stories. He began his career with a series of romantic letters published anonymously in Berlin, (1783–84). His first published book was "Selections from the Devil's Papers" (1789), followed by "The Invisible Lodge" (1793). His writing qualities were soon recognized by some of the best critics of the day and he became very popular. His many works included "Introduction to Aesthetics" (1804), "The Awkward Age" (1805), "Levana, or, Pedagogy" (1807), "Twilights for Germany" (1809) and "Mars and Phoebus Exchange Thrones in the Year 1814" (1814). In addition to his books, his poems were translated into English and published in a series of volumes. In 1824, he lost his sight and died a year later of edema in Bayreuth, Germany.
