Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the snow on the mountain's rim,
I am the laughter in children's eyes,
I am the sand at the water's edge,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle Autumn rain,
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the star that shines at night,
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die...

Attention: The photo of Macy Mazelle Carter and Daniel Kirkland Griffis was copied from this site and added to Ancestry.com. It was identified as Macy's sister Lavinia and her husband Oscar. The original photo was given to me by my grandmother, Vera Griffis Westberry and her sister, Doris Cleo Griffis Sullivan (both daughters of Daniel Kirkland Griffis and Macy Carter Griffis). There is no question that this photo is Daniel Kirkland Griffis and Macy Mazelle Carter and NOT Lavinia Carter and her husband Oscar Griffis.
Born August 11, 1888. Died September 24, 1929 in a train accident near Moore Haven, Florida. ACL railroad foreman.Son of William Manning Griffis and Mary "Pollie" Griffis.Husband of Macy Mazelle Carter (married September 5, 1909) and father of Vera Griffis Westberry;Lera Griffis Smith; Doris Cleo Griffis Sullivan; Joseph Griffis (JD);Cleveron Alois Griffis Mayo and Margaret Griffis. After his first wife's death from childbirth, Daniel married Mattie Mae Westberry and had two children: Kenneth and Leonard German "LG" Griffis. He had always stated that he was part Creek Indian and had a grandmother who reportedly was a Creek Indian medicine woman. He was employed as a section foreman on the Atlantic Coastline Railroad. He died when he was struck by a train while on a push car repairing a section of track near Moore Haven, Florida. The coroner stated on the death certificate: "Inquest not held... not necessary. Inquiry held by me. Accidentally killed by Atlantic Coastline rail train." All of the other workers were able to escape without injury but Daniel was instantly killed. Vera Griffis Westberry commented on her father's death in a letter dated February 3, 1978: "Daddy was killed by a train between Muckway and Moore Haven, Florida. There wasn't an undertaker in Moore Haven and daddy had been dead for hours before the undertaker got to him and they wouldn't let us see him until just before they put his body on the train taking him to Georgia." Daniel's tombstone reads: "For him we trust a place is given among the souls with Christ in Heaven."
