Jesse J. Tannehill enlisted as a private on October 20, 1864 at Placerville, California and in Company G, California 7th Infantry Regiment on October 30, 1864. Mustered out on 24 May 1866 at San Francisco, California. Sources: Register of California Men in the War of the Rebellion 1861 to 1867.

He applied for veterans benefits on April 4, 1888 while a resident of Colorado. Source: Burial of Ex-Union Soldiers in Butte County 1889-1928. These records were compiled and published in the Paradise Genealogical Society publication "The Goldmine", showing occupation as laborer.

Chico Daily Record, Friday, February 18, 1898, pg 4 col 1: Death of a Veteran. J.J. Tannehill, father of Mrs. W.S. Kerr of Chico, died yesterday at the County Infirmary where he had been several months. Deceased was aged 77 years. He was a member of Halleck Post, G.A.R., which order will have charge of the funeral which will take place in Chico. Undertaker Charles Fetters went to the Infirmary last evening to get the remains.

The funeral will take place today at 2 o'clock p.m. from the undertaking parlors of Fetters & Williams.

Chico Daily Record, Monday, February 21, 1898, pg 1 col 2: Tannehill Funeral. The funeral of J.J. Tannehill took place yesterday afternoon and impressive services were conducted at the grave by Halleck Post, G.A.R., the members of which attended in a body. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. George Davis of the Baptist Church.

Chico Cemetery Association records indicate burial took place on Feb 20, 1898.

With much felt thank to those who so kindly cared for the flowers that were refused a place on Mr. Tannehill's coffin Friday afternoon, as it was a last of his to be granted by kind friends who cared for him while living and respected his wish when dead, also to those who so kindly arranged everything so nicely as a token of respect. /s/ From friends of Mr. Tannehill.

His widow Miranda C. was granted widow's benefits on March 28, 1898.
