Company F, 40th Indiana Infantry-Civil War

George W. Tipton of Northfield, Indiana enlisted as a private on November 18, 1861. He enlisted in Company F, Indiana 40th Infantry Regiment. Mustered out on December 6, 1864. Sources: Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana, and, U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865.

Veterans benefits were sought by application on October 7, 1889 while a resident of Iowa. Burial took place on December 24, 1925. Widow Ann was granted widow's benefits on January 25, 1926.

Oroville Daily Register (Oroville, California) 23 Dec 1925, Wednesday Page 1: George W. Tipton Dies In Durham. DURHAM, Dec. 22 – George W. Tipton, 82, died at 10:30 o'clock Sunday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Maude Butler, in Durham.

The deceased, who was born in Indiana, was a veteran of the Civil War. He is survived by three sons, George and John Tipton of Ogden, Utah, and Clyde Tipton, of Sturgis, South Dakota, and five daughters, Mrs. Grace Dyden of Waterloo, Ia., Mrs. William M. Camery of New Underwood, South Dakota, Mrs. Anna Kaubish of Sturgis, South Dakota, Mrs. H.B. Johnson of Twin Falls, Idaho and Mrs. Butler of Durham.

Tipton who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.M. Butler. The sympathy of the community is with Mrs. Butler and her mother and brothers, John and George Tipton of Ogden who arrived yesterday afternoon.

Mrs. Butler's parents came to California from Ogden about two months ago to spend the winter and anticipated celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on February 15th. The father succumbed to pneumonia on December 20th. Mrs. Tipton plans to remain at the home of her daughter for the winter months.

Tipton, of the Fortieth Indiana infantry, died at Durham, Calif., on Dec. 21, and was buried at Chico, Calif., under the direction of the G.A.R. Surviving are his … (listing as above) … and 26 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Two brothers are also living, William Tipton, aged 94, in the east, and Frank Tipton, aged 86, of Trinidad, Calif.

Chico Record (Chico, California) 12 Apr 1929, Friday Page 1: Graves of Chico Civil War Veterans Marked By Stones. Graves of 13 Civil War veterans were marked with appropriate tombstones yesterday when W.M. Bundy, adjutant of Halleck Post No. 19, Grand Army of the Republic, his son, Fred Gwinnup, and his grandson, George Gwinnup, placed the stones in the Grand Army plot in the Chico cemetery.

Mr. Bundy, as adjutant of the Chico post, supervised the work. The stones were furnished by the federal government and were sent to Chico from Boston.

Those whose graves were marked follow: George W. Tipton, R.B. Richards, D.M. Birdseye, John M. Irwin, C.C. Maltby, Samuel Baker, John Sauber, D.D. Cornick, Hugh W. Hughes, Watis Batchelor, Henry M. Stevens, Frank Popplewell and N.W. Henderson.
