Joseph Waterman of Cromwell, Connecticut enlisted in Company H, 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment Connecticut on May 22, 1861. Discharged from Company H, 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment Connecticut on November 23, 1862. Enlisted in Company B, 2nd Cavalry Regiment Regular Army on November 24, 1862. Promoted to Full Musician on September 26, 1863. Discharged from Company B, 2nd Cavalry Regiment Regular Army on April 24, 1864. Sources: American Civil War Soldiers

He applied for veterans benefits on August 5, 1888, while a resident of Connecticut. Chico Cemetery Association records indicate burial of 66-year-old Joseph H. Watterman [sic] on July 20, 1911.

Chico Record, Wednesday Morning July 19, 1911, pg 8 col 5: Joseph H. Waterman Died Late Last Night. Joseph H. Waterman, aged 66 years, a veteran of the civil war, died at his home on Pomona avenue at 10 o’clock last night, the cause of death being consumption. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the home, probably under the auspices of Halleck Post, G.A.R., Rev. C. Todd Clark will officiate.

Mr. Waterman was born in Cromwell, Conn., November 22, 1844. He came to Chico over two years ago, and for a time was employed as clerk at the Chico hotel. Pulmonary trouble of long duration caused him to give up his work, and some time ago he went to the soldiers’ home at Yountville, but returned shortly to pass his remaining days at home. He leaves a widow.
