In 1815, the Cabildo de Montevideo (State) took charge of the education of the boy José María (aged nine), as well as providing some assistance to the family of the Chief of the Orientals, who at that time was in his General Headquarters, in Purification, without being able to meet the needs of their own.
In 1846, being at that time a colonel of the Republic, José María Artigas visited his father in Ibiray, with the aim of making him return to his homeland.
