Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 28, 2021, at Fairview Baptist Church, for John Mitchell Ellison, age 89, of Gadsden, who passed away November 24, 2021. Reverend Gary Williams will officiate. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Village Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ellison graduated from Etowah High School in 1951 and always loved attending his class reunions. He retired from Republic Steel after 41 years of service. John was a former member and president of Rebel Camping Club of Gadsden, member of Rambling Masters #45 of National Camping Travelers where he served as Master of Travel and state director. John was a charter member, past master, and secretary of Noccalula Lodge #913, past member of Dwight Lodge #550, former member of the Bellevue Chapter, and Sam Dixon chapter #218 of Centre. He belonged to the Cherokee Order of the Eastern Star #550 and the Alabama City Chapter having served as Worthy Patron and other offices. John was a past member and deacon of Bellevue Baptist Church and was currently a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Mr. Ellison was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Long Ellison; parents, William and Vada Ellison; daughter, Claudia Lynn Colvin; brothers, Leonard, Grover, and Jack Ellison; sister, Catherine Farley, Mary Hazel McDonald, and Opal Coplin; grandsons, Blake and Justin Harp; granddaughter, Ashley Henderson; great grandsons, Braxton and Raylin.
He is survived by his children, James Michael (Shelia) Ellison, Barry Keith (Freida) Ellison, Phyllis (Ivan) Meeks, Kimberly Dawn (Albert) Henderson, Joeleane Smith, Tina Smith, Elizabeth Barnett; grandchildren, Tammie Morgan, Tommy (Brandi) Nance, Nikki (Drew) Steele, Brandon (Lindsey) Ellison, Tara Ann Henderson, Heather (Jason) Clayton, James Walter, Amber (Brian) Davis, Lindsey (Brenton) Prickett , and the light of his life, McKenzie Rai Ellison; a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family wishes to express a special thanks to Southern Care Hospice.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church.
