Betty Mariion Blakemore
December 20, 1927 - November 24, 2021

Betty Hubble Blakemore, 93, co-founder of the Open Concern Clothing Center in Richmond, passed away Nov. 24, 2021, in Berea. Mrs. Blakemore spent nearly 50 years volunteering weekly at the clothing center, enjoying helping schoolchildren in need find clothes and shoes.

She moved to Richmond in 1966, when her husband, the Rev. Charles L. Blakemore, was named senior pastor at the First Christian Church. With her cheerful and kind nature and heart of compassion, she loved being a minister's wife and serving in all the churches her husband pastored. In 1970, the couple and 17 other church members founded Madison County's first clothing center, and she devoted much of her energy to it.

Widowed at age 49 when her husband died after a heart attack in 1977, Mrs. Blakemore remained active in the community, also serving as a longtime volunteer for the American Heart Association. At church, she loved taking part in the annual bazaar, contributing her signature fruitcake cookies. This year's church bazaar was dedicated in her honor. For many years, she also worked in the dental offices of Drs. Stanley Todd, Jack Hutton, and Jim Ney.

The former Betty Marion Hubble was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on Dec. 20, 1927, the youngest child and only daughter of Fred and Aletha Hubble. Betty attended Third Christian Church and graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, then attended Transylvania University in Lexington for three years. She met Transy classmate Chuck Blakemore when both worked at the local YMCA. They married June 15, 1951, and after her husband finished college, they moved to Paducah, where he held his first pastorate. They also served churches in Russellville and Madisonville, before coming to Richmond with their two children.

Mrs. Blakemore was noted for her upbeat personality, and her hobby was going out and doing things, always wanting to help others. A member of the Chi Omega sorority in college, she later helped found a chapter at Eastern Kentucky University and enjoyed many friendships. But most of all, she cherished her family. She and her daughter Connie had a pre-COVID Thanksgiving tradition of celebrating at Churchill Downs with friends. And she especially enjoyed the Christmas holiday trips the entire family shared in North Carolina and Pigeon Forge, celebrating her birthday.

In addition to her daughter, Connie Blakemore of Richmond, Mrs. Blakemore's survivors include her son, Thomas "Mark" Blakemore (and his wife Heather) of Brownsville, Texas; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Claire and Bryant Blakemore; and numerous nephews and nieces. She also was predeceased by her brothers, Albert Hubble and Fred Hubble Jr.

A memorial service for Mrs. Blakemore will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 17 at First Christian Church in Richmond. Officiating will be Dr. Glenn Birkett, Dr. Robert Vickers, and Rev. Patrick Messer. Interment will be in the Blakemore (Smithfield) family cemetery in Smithfield, Kentucky.
