Samuel Boyd enlisted as a private, in Co. M, 1 USCHA on 18 Oct 1864 in Knoxville, TN. He mustered out 31 March 1866 in Chattanooga, Tn. From Nov 1865 to Dec 1866 he was listed as an on duty bugler with a brass military band. In his Company Description Book he is described as age 18, 5 feet 4 inches, with a black complexion, black eyes, and black hair. His occupation was farmer.

Samuel W. Boyd applied for his pension on 4 June 1886. He was married to Margaret or Margareth Boyd, as she appears later on his pension card.

Samuel Boyd appears in the 1890 Veterans Schedules of the U.S. Federal Census for Knoxville, Knox Co. TN. It did not include the dates for his military service.

He is placed here based upon information found in his U.S., Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, 1861-1904 tombstone request. It lists Good Samaritan as his resting place and provides his date of death. Good Samaritan cemetery is now considered a part of the Historic Odd Fellows Cemeteries overlay. This information is also found in the article, "Tombstones of Tennessee Union Civil War veterans A-J," p.30 of the magazine Tennessee Ancestors, Aug, 2012.

In his book, "All But Forgotten-the African American Cemeteries of Knox Co." Robert McGinnis lists Samuel Boyd on p. 71. This source lists his marker as being in Daughters of Zion cemetery. Daughters of Zion is also included in the Historic Odd Fellows Cemeteries overlay.
