Actor; director; screenwriter. He was born in St. Poelten, Lower Austria. After his final school examination in Silesia, he studied art history, history and German philology in Breslau. 1938 he started at the drama school of the "Staatliches Schauspielhaus" in Berlin. In the year 1939 he spent 10 months in the concentration camp Sachsenhausen. After World War II he began his career as an actor in movies like "Die letzte Brücke" (1953) and "Es geschah am 20. Juli" (1955). He also worked as an photographer. 1958 he started as director with his first movie, a documentation. His most famous movie was "Die Brücke" (1959), which gave him international success. First he was married to Agnes Fink, a famous german actress. His second wife Elisabeth Wicki-Endriss, also a director, presented 2006 a documentation about the life of Bernhard Wiki. In the year 2001 the "Bernhard Wicki Gedächtnis Fonds" was founded, which awards the "Bernhard Wicki Filmpreis."
