Marie Lucille Jackson passed away on November 16 in Iowa City, Iowa. She was in the process of moving from Mansfield, Ohio to Iowa City, where she planned to move into Legacy Point to be near her daughter Pat. She arrived in Iowa City just a little over a week before COVID cut short her plans: she was 97 years old.

Marie was born on June 29, 1924, to Lucille and Clark Robinson. She was raised on a dairy farm near Lexington, Ohio, graduated from Lexington High School and attended The Ohio State University in the occupational therapy program from 1942 to 1946. She worked at the Mansfield Rehabilitation Center for five years, returned to Ashland College for her teaching degree, then taught kindergarten at Woodville Elementary School in Mansfield for 27 years.

She was devoted to her family and to family activities. Late in her life she became the matriarch for multiple branches of the family. Family members loved to hear her talk about her experiences growing up and to learn about family history. Marie created strong communities of friends in all aspects of her life, throughout her life. She cherished and maintained these friendship and family communities. In turn, she was cherished by her friends and family.

Marie recalled her college years at Ohio State fondly and remained loyal to her Ohio State Buckeyes--especially the Ohio State Marching Band—to the very end (she watched the Buckeyes defeat Purdue from her hospital room just three days before she died).

Marie's lifelong curiosity about the world and love for learning manifested itself in many ways. She loved animals, taking every opportunity to visit zoos and to read about her favorite animals. As she became less mobile, she derived great pleasure from watching documentaries about animal life. She attended hundreds of concerts and theater performances. She travelled extensively, journeying to 48 states, Canada, several European countries, Great Britain, Ireland, Greece, Egypt, Scandinavia, and Costa Rica. Whether through reading AAA guidebooks to her children on family road trips or through the kindergarten units she developed about the countries she had visited, she always found a way not only to share her knowledge but to instill her love of learning in others.

She was a member of Mansfield's First Congregational Church for 60 years. After her husband's death, she became a Stephen Minister in order to provide support to others. In her retirement, she became chairperson of the church library committee. During the 13 years she served as chair, the committee expanded the library's collection and created a welcoming communal space in which members of the church congregated before and after church services.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her son Michael, and her brother Harold Robinson. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Ed Folsom (Iowa City), her daughter Susan Alexander (Albuquerque), and her grandson's family—Ben and Andrea Folsom, and her great grandchildren, Ella and Charlie Folsom (New Hampshire).

A memorial service will be planned for April 2022 in Ohio. Condolences may be sent to daughters Pat ([email protected]) and Susan ([email protected]).
