Garrison entered into the steamboat & manufacturing business with his brother upon his arrival in St. Louis. They turned the business over to Oliver's son & headed for San Francisco, where they established the steamship line known as Pacific Mail & both amassed large fortunes. Garrison returned to St. Louis in 1854 & entered into the commission business with his two sons. Their business was known as O. Garrison & Sons. In 1857, he was elected president of Mechanics' Bank, St. Louis, Missouri, a position he held for 22 years. He was appointed receiver of the Pacific Railroad of Missiouri (later known as Missouri Pacific Railroad) & later became the vice-president & general manager. He was stockholder, president & director of Vulcan Iron Works & also owned the Rich Hill waterworks at Rich Hill, Missouri & Jupiter Furnaces at Carondolet, Missouri.
