Walter Smedley Jr., 89, of the Lima section of Middletown, a sailing enthusiast and a Quaker, died March 2 at home at Penncrest Farm.

Born at Penncrest Farm, Mr. Smedley grew up as a birthright Quaker in the Religious Society of Friends. He was a lifelong member of Middletown Monthly Meeting.

A 1938 graduate of the Haverford School, Mr. Smedley earned a bachelor of science in chemical engineering in 1942 from Princeton University where he attended on a full Scott Paper Co. scholarship. After six months as an adjunct professor at Princeton, he received a commission to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

His graduation honors and class standing allowed him to serve on the faculty there throughout World War II while maintaining his Quaker beliefs.

Mr. Smedley was a manufacturers' representative to the shipbuilding industry for many years. He was previously a marine power specialist with Dravo Corp. Mr. Smedley was a member and president of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

He enjoyed sailing with his family in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, N.J. During his 14 years as race committee chairman of Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club in New Jersey, the club twice won the St. Petersburg Trophy awarded by U.S. Sailing for excellence in regatta management. He also served as commodore, trustee and senior trustee and was a recipient of the Carrigan Trophy and two-time recipient of the Commodore's Trophy.

An avid E-Scow sailor, Mr. Smedley was the creator and a founding member of the National Class E-Scow Association where he also served as commodore.

Mr. Smedley enjoyed playing squash and golf. He was a member of the Ozone Club, which his father founded in 1901.

Mr. Smedley was also a member of the Church of the Redeemer in Lower Merion, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Scott Arboretum, the Merion Golf Club and the Merion Cricket Club.

He was a leader of the Princeton Alumni Class of 1942 and a supporter of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Mr. Smedley was the father of the late Samuel Spencer.

Survivors: Wife of more than 66 years, Mary Jane Felix Smedley; children, Walter III, Stephanie, Sarah; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Road, Bryn Mawr, Lower Merion.
