Chester Kossman passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer at his home in Merigold, MS. He was 60.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at Ray Funeral Home. Burial will follow in New Cleveland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Walt, Rogers Varner, Dr. Dennis Higdon, Dr. Frank Witherspoon, King Rogers, Robbie Kent, Glenn Muir, Barney Chiz, Jimmy Yeager, George Hirsberg, Stanley Gaines, III, Pete Johnson, Jamie Smith, Steven Smith, Lee McCarty, Eckward McKnight, Dr. Eugene Tibbs, John Taylor, Cecil Bridges, Horace Allen, Dr. Joe Portera, and John Carrol.

Born on October 1, 1947 in Cleveland, he was educated at the Hill Demonstration School, attended Cleveland High School, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and Automotive marketing from Northwood University, Midland, MI.

After working in the family automobile dealership in Cleveland, he opened Chester Kossman Buick, Pontiac, GMC in Clarksdale, MS. After a number of years in Clarksdale, he sold his dealership and rejoined his father and brother in the family business in Cleveland. Chester learned his lessons well when it came to helping improve his community and the lot of all of its citizens.

While living in Clarksdale, he was a member of Beth Israel Congregation and taught a youth Sunday School class. He was a member of the Clarksdale Chamber of Commerce where he was a board member. He served as a board member and as president of the Clarksdale Community Concerts. He was a Rotarian in Clarksdale, and later in Cleveland, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. For years he chaired the Cleveland Rotary Club "Rotary Ladies Night' event. He was also a Board Member of the Cleveland Community Bank.

In Cleveland, he served as a board member of the Bologna Performing Arts Center, as president of the Crosstie Arts Council, and was active in the Delta Arts Alliance. He was a member of Adath Israel Congregation.

Chester had a lifelong interest and commitment to Boy Scouts, and was a member of Troop 23, where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended the Boy Scout jamboree in Colorado Springs, CO, and later the Philmont Scout Ranch. Years later he was named a Co-Scoutmaster of a troop in Cleveland. For many years he was active in the Friends of Scouting fund drives in Cleveland and was awarded the Silver Beaver Scouting Award for outstanding adult leadership in 2005.

He was named to the Methodist Healthcare Foundation board in Memphis, and served in that capacity for more than 20 years. The Foundation recently established a fund to grant college scholarships to children of Methodist Hospital employees. He served on that committee from its inception, and the fund will be named in his honor.

Two of his favorite activities were using his broad knowledge of antiques to serve as a "spotter" for Neysa Yeager and Mike Chiz on their many buying trips to England for The Fireside Shop in Cleveland. He also assisted Jamie Cummins and Mike Chiz in their Boss Fox Estate Sales. His interests were wide and varied. He loved traveling, and collected antiques from this country and abroad. He was a dedicated Backgammon player. Shelves filled with books line the walls of his home and serve as a testimony to his love of reading. He was a well known enthusiast of hot-air balloons-many bright colored miniatures are scattered throughout his home. One of the highlights of his life was a hot-air balloon ride with a group of friends to celebrate their collective fiftieth birthdays. Anyone who knew him, however, would be quick to agree that the times he loved the best in his varied and productive life were the times he spent with his large and close-knit family, his mother, two sisters and two brothers, nieces and nephews.

Chester left no obligation unfulfilled, no job or duty unfinished, and no friend or loved one untouched. As one who knew him intimately said, "Chester has left the stage, and the curtain is drawn. There is no understudy."
He is preceded in death by his father. S.E. (Ed) Kossman, Sr., of Cleveland; and his grandparents, Julia and Ben Kossman of Greenville, MS, and Adolph and Leah Jacobs of Opelousas, LA.

Survivors include his mother, Juliet Kossman of Cleveland; and siblings, Ed Kossman, Jr. (Kitty) of Cleveland, Juliet Klein (Jerry) of Germantown, TN, Dr. Charles Kossman (Marcia) of San Diego, CA, and Dr. Carol Kossman of Madison, MS; nieces and nephews, Natalie Reaves (Heath) of Collierville, TN, Edward Kossman, III of Cleveland, Julie Boshwit (Andrew) of Memphis, Jan Klein of Memphis, TN, Dr. Steven Kossman (Jennifer) of San Diego, CA, Bret Kossman of Tokyo, Japan, Benjamin Yarbrough (Lauren) of Chicago, IL, Chester Yarbrough (Courtney) of San Diego, CA, Kilby Yarbrough of Madison, MS, Caroline Yarbrough of Meadville, MS; great nieces and nephews, Jeremy and Allison Boshwit of Memphis, TN, Hunter, Sidney and Shelby Reaves of Collierville, TN, Jacob, Zachary and Benjamin Kossman of San Diego, CA, ; and honorary grandchildren, Sarah Bennett and Jim Smith.

Chester's family is most appreciative of the care he received from Camille Strickland, Betty Strickland, Lisa Houston, and the outstanding service from Community Hospice. The family would also like to express thanks for all the many visits, food, phone calls and other courtesies extended to Chester and his family during his illness.
