GOSPORT — Mina Jane Ahlemeyer, age 90, died at the Gosport Nursing Home December 18, 2007.

She was born January 2, 1917, in Gosport, Owen County, to the late William R. and Mabel Stierwalt. She graduated from Gosport High School. She was married to the late Francis B. "Pat" Ahlemeyer.

Mrs. Ahlemeyer graduated from Indiana University with both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Art Education. As part of her Bachelor's degree program, she spent a summer doing art research in London. Mrs. Ahlemeyer exhibited in many professional shows including the prestigious Swope Art Gallery and at the Indiana State Fair, as well as the Robinson House-Spencer Civic Center. Her preferred subject matter included still life and florals, but her favorite work in one of her shows was a painting of her grandson's pet Lhasa Apso. She taught art at both Ellettsville and Owen Valley schools for 17 years. Prior to becoming a teacher, she and her mother, Mabel Stierwalt, owned a beauty shop in Gosport. She also gave art lessons. She was proud of her many students who became accomplished artists. Her love of art was an interest as she visited countries around the world.

Mrs. Ahlemeyer was a charter member of the Owen County Art Guild and served as Secretary and President. She was also a charter member of Hoosier Hills Art Guild and a life member of the Indiana University Alumni Club. She was also a member of the Owen County Historic Preservation Society, Spinners & Weavers Guild, Kappa Kappa Sigma philanthropic sorority, Gosport Fortnightly Club, Gosport Baptist Church, Monroe County Retired Teachers Association and Order of Eastern Star. She also served as a docent for the IU Art Museum.

Her daughter, Betty, and husband, Jerry Quick, and their two children, Patrick and Andrew, and her twin brother, Minor John Stierwalt, survive Mrs. Ahlemeyer. Her husband, parents and one sister, Francis Johnson, preceded her in death. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Gosport. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at the Gosport Cemetery.
