HEMSLEY, CARLILLIE MARIE (AGE 79) OF NEWBURG, MARYLAND

Carlillie Marie Hemsley unexpectedly transitioned into eternal peace on October 24, 2021, at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in LaPlata, Maryland.

Her Roots (very strong)...Carlillie "Lilly" was born the fourth child of William J. and Alice B. (Jones) Hemsley on November 5, 1941, in Wayside, Maryland. Being one of four siblings was demanding, however she rose to the challenge throughout life. She grew up in Newburg, Maryland, and attended church with her family. As a pre-teen, she dedicated her life to the Lord and began her Christian journey at Shiloh United Methodist Church, now Shiloh Community United Methodist Church. Lilly was an active member her entire life. At church, she attended worship service (sometimes three times a day), Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. It was at home and church that Lilly received her spiritual, educational, and moral foundation that remained with her throughout life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two siblings: her brother, William E, and her sister, Odessa M; one nephew, Anthony R. (Tiger) and his wife Donna and one sister in-law, Victoria Y. Cooper.

Her Trunk (steadfast)...Lilly grew up during the Great Depression Segregation and World War II era. She had a quiet, unshakable spirit. Even through troubling times, she excelled in all aspects of her life. She attended the segregated schools in Charles County, Maryland and obtained her High School Diploma from Bel Alton High School in Bel Alton, Maryland.

Her Branches (reached out)...After graduating from Bel Alton High School, she gained employment at Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, Maryland and later at the Joint Base Andrews in Camp Springs, Maryland. Lilly got tired of punching the clock so she kicked off her 9 to 5 shoes and became the best neighborhood childcare provider. She also took on a paid position at Shiloh, as the church custodian for several years. She saw to it that the church was presentable and in order for worship service every Sunday morning.

Out of her many jobs, becoming the neighborhood childcare provider brought her the most joy. Keshawn Thornton (Man-Man), Deron Wells, Jr (Pom-Pom), Dominique Dorsey and Alexis Johnson are just a few children she cared for. When she began to care for Keshawn, she would leave home bright and early to make sure she arrived before he woke for school. She would see to it that he had breakfast, a snack when he got home, and that dinner was made before she left. She would arrive to his school an hour and 30 minutes before dismissal, to make sure she was first in line to get her Man-Man. In her eyes, Man-Man as she would call him, was the "golden child", and DID NO wrong.

Her Leaves (were plentiful)...Lilly had 3 very devoted children: two sons- Gabriel Geoffrey and Sean Latrell and daughter- Diane Denise (Niecie). Just one day after her birthday, on November 6, 1989, Lilly was over-joyed to welcome her grandchild; the daughter of Niecie, Chantice Ki-Shawn Hill (TC). As a grandmother, Lilly lent a helping hand in raising Chantice throughout her childhood and youth.

At home, Lilly pursued her hobbies: making homemade apple sauce, polishing her nails, watering her flowers, fusing at the kids for riding their bikes and playing ball in the front yard near her plants or the dogs as they would do their business in the yard. Although she would fuss, she loved to sit on the porch and watch her great great nieces and nephews enjoy the outside.

She would also play solitaire until her computer or phone battery would die. Lilly would call family and friends on their birthdays to sing the entire "Happy Birthday "song to them, in her own unique tune. She was a quiet but feisty woman. When she got mad, the entire world knew it. Her words became slurred, her head would shake, and she would have an even higher pitched voice. Lilly enjoyed her family and friends and they in return, enjoyed her. Whenever you rode or walked by, you always saw her sitting on the porch yelling out and waving…heyyyyy!

Her Fruit (was good)...Lilly's faith, trust and confidence in God sustained her through-out her challenges in life. She lived by the "Fruit of the Spirit." Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Humility and Self-Control. Her other virtues included honesty and perseverance. She knew when to be quiet and when to speak up. She did not like confusion or confrontation, especially between family members. If the arguing did not stop, she would add her 2 cents and the arguing would stop immediately. She was a loyal and devoted family member and friend, who tried to help all generations. Her steadfast advice was to get a good EDUCATION and have life insurance on yourself. That was the key for everyone's success as far as she was concerned.

Her Seeds (were planted on good soil)...Lilly is one that should be modeled, as she was compassionate in all of her endeavors. Those she leaves to cherish her memory will forever be grateful for the impact she had on their lives. They are her children: sons, Gabriel and Sean; and daughter, Diane; grandchildren: Krishonna Carter and Chantice Hill; great grandchildren: Semiyyah Carter and Jacob Ramsey; one brother: James R. (Ann); devoted nieces: Tonda, Paula (Deon), LaToya/Tink; devoted nephew, Tony; a daughter by heart: Dina Brawner; a grandson by heart: Keshawn Thornton; godchildren: Alnita Chase and Delvin Dorsey; dear friends: Mary Julia Wells, Mary "Genie" Forbes and Shirley Hemsley; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and her Shiloh Community UMC Church Family.

"And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither;

And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." Psalm 1:3
