Canton, IL - Clara Pauline Smith, 79, formerly of Canton, died at 1:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at Clayberg Nursing Home in Cuba, where she was a resident.

Born May 2, 1924, in Buckheart Township, Fulton County, to Sheldon W. and Beulah F. Armstrong Dowell, she married Dorris W. Smith on June 4, 1943, in Kahoka, Mo. He died June 19, 1980.

She also was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, two brothers and one sister.

Surviving are three sons, Ira and Dennis, both of Bloomington, Ind., and Carl of Portsmouth, Va.; one daughter, Laura (and Norman) Wheeler of Cuba; seven grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Banner United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school.

She also was a member of the Navy Mothers Club, Women's Auxiliary Club 338 and the Women's Relief Corps.

Graveside services will be in Walnut Cemetery in rural Banner.
