John was the son of Justus and Philena Scott Arms. He fought in the Civil War - Union Army - Wisconsin Infantry Co H 7. He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness and also at Fredericksburg. He died from the effect of the wounds. John was a farmer.

John married Mary Jane Johnson in 1866 at Wauzeka, Wisconsin. They were the parents of Ellen, Clinton, Lily, Bertha, Arthur, Justus, John Nathan(born 1878), Wesley, Franklin, Monroe, and Estella Arms.
