Virginia Irene Wesley Phillips went home to be with the lord on Friday, December 17, 2021.

Born in Blaine Township, Washington County, to John Clyde Wesley and Florence White Wesley, on March 10, 1927.

She was the oldest of six children. On September 17, 1945, she married Lawrence O. Phillips, Sr., in Washington.

She is survived by her seven children, Lawrence O. Phillips, Jr. (Judy), of McMurray, Rebecca Suzanne Hawkins, of Washington, Laura Jo Dorsey (Richard), of Claysville, John B. Phillips (Pam), of Washington, David P. Phillips (Mari), of Prosperity, Daniel Kevin Phillips (Tammy), of Prosperity, and James Mark Phillips, of Sycamore.

She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, William (Sherry) Phillips, Khristie Phillips, Todd Hawkins, Lori (Tom) Moore, Rachelle (Jim) Anderson, Richard (Brandy) Dorsey II, John (Amy) Phillips, Joshua Phillips, Nicole (Matthew) Phillips, Carri (Joseph) Breze, Jason (Stacey) Phillips, Jonathan Phillips, Jennifer (Michael) Phillips, Shawn (Melody) Phillips, Christopher (Katrina) Phillips, Kimberly (Rob) McAnallen, Jeremy (Angela) Phillips, and Joel (Jennifer) Phillips; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia was a hard worker with a strong, abiding faith in God. She was a member of The Church of Christ, in Washington, for many years. She loved to socialize and had many friends. She also loved to get "fancied up" and put on her jewelry and make-up.

Virginia was an avid reader and was largely self-educated. She loved to learn and was very knowledgeable about a wide variety of subjects.

After her husband's death in 1978, she obtained her driver's license and got her first job after 33 years of being a homemaker and stay at home mother.

She was very practical and her children and grandchildren appreciated her wise advice. She was always available to lend a listening ear and a hug. She had a knack for making a dollar stretch to feed and clothe seven children, and could make a meal from whatever was on hand; skills she learned at an early age from "mothering" her younger brothers and sisters.

She remained close to her siblings over the years and was beloved by her many nieces and nephews, who called her "Aunt Jeannie."

Virginia was very accepting and her door was always open to her children's friends, who called her "Mom," and anyone else who needed a cup of coffee and a friend. She opened her heart and her home to her daughter's boyfriend, Harold "Butch" Hawkins, who, like all of her children, became one of her own. She loved with her whole heart and gave freely of whatever she had, even when she had very little.

In her later years, she traveled with her companion, Warren Aiken, whom she faithfully took care of until his death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Laurence; her daughter-in-law, Betty Phillips; her son-in-law, Harold "Butch" Hawkins; and her granddaughter, Jacie Rae Phillips.

No one who met Virginia Phillips ever forgot her unique personality and she will be remembered as being "quite a character." She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Friends were received from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, in the Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where a service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 22, with Pastor David Deagel officiating.

Interment followed in Fairmount Cemetery, West Finley.
