Mathew and his wife Mary are buried on the old homestead on the edge of Hortman next to the creek that runs through the property. There are no headstones. Graves are marked by rose bushes planted at or shortly after death. When I found the graves many years ago the rose bushes were almost dead. At That time there was a large oak tree which had grown next to the large two story plantation house which of course was no longer standing. If I remember right, at the time of death, there was no village cemetery.
