Governor of Suriname. Born into a family of Dutch nobility, De Savornin Lohman was able to use the honorific title Jhr., meaning Jonkheer, which can be translated as Squire in English. He studied Roman and Contemporary Law at the University of Groningen from 1850 until 1855. After his graduation, he was also able to use the title Mr., meaning Meester in de Rechten (Master of Laws). Afterwards, he began working as a prosecutor in Assen. In 1886, he was appointed Advocate General of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, a position he held until 1888. A year later, he was appointed Governor of Suriname, which was a Dutch colony at the time. He was not popular, as the people felt he was appointed through cronyism and it was rumoured he was anti-Semitic. This feeling was strengthened by the fact De Savornin Lohman would not inform the Estates of Suriname, which had many Jewish members. Additionally, this led to accusations of undemocratic behaviour. His plan to increase taxes on the former slaves in the Para District decreased public opinion even further. In 1891, heavy riots broke out. The riots seemed to be targeted towards the Jewish population of Suriname and had to be suppressed with violence. De Savornin Lohman had to take the fall and was dismissed by the Colonial Government in June 1891, after which he returned to the Netherlands.
