Requiem For A Kitchen Queen
by Judy Sue Thomas in fond memory of Ellen Eslick.

Ellen believed in God and the afterlife and frequently attended church. I have learned that when we enter Heaven one of the perks is that we are eternally young. I once mentioned that to Ellen who immediately rejected that perk so I dropped the subject like a hot potato and never mentioned it again. After she crossed over to Heaven, was she surprised she was young again?
She had been admitted to a hospital ICU, she had one lung and a former chronic cigarette smoker.
Ellen will be missed at the apartment complex where she was a long-time resident until last summer when she and her dog Milly moved to the cottage of her dreams, sadly they only got to enjoy it for about six months when she became ill.
During the time Ellen and Milly lived at their former residence, Ellen was a familiar volunteer in the kitchen during the monthly potlucks at what is called "The Clubhouse".
Ellen took her volunteer kitchen duties seriously once declaring, "This is MY kitchen!" And the Kitchen Queen ruled it with authority, woe be to the resident who stepped into her kitchen and interfered with any of the Queen's rules.
The Queen has stepped out of her castle known as the clubhouse kitchen for a far better place and took her dish towel and spatula with her.
As for those of us left behind "we miss you, but it isn't goodbye forever, just until we break bread again in that far better place."
Condolences to Milly Eslick who has lost her mom, and is currently living with two of Ellen's friends, who attended Ellen's final send-off, Milly did not attend, and was reunited with her brother dog.
After Ellen's service, five of Ellen's friends from the church all attended and I, not a member of their church at the time, gathered at Cheddar's restaurant, Pasadena TX because that was Ellen's favorite place to "break bread". She may have been there in spirit smiling at us, but no, she was probably too busy with the joyous eternal reunion with her husband, their daughter, and anyone else she missed while she was here and they were there.
Good night, Milly's Mom....until we meet again.
