Cecilia Ong Bulosan was born on June 1st, 1933 in Manila, Philippines. Her parents were Carmen Gonzales and Valeriano Ong. Cecilia endured a lonely and challenging childhood, as a result of losing her mother and many of her mother's relatives to tuberculosis at the age of 2. As a result, Cecilia lived in different cities, including Cebu and Davao, where she lived with different family members. In 1956, Cecilia took the opportunity to travel and live in Vancouver, Canada where her uncle was assigned to work as an Ambassador for Foreign affairs. There, she performed domestic and child care work and subsequently helped her aunt and uncle care for their five children. In 1958, Lydia Bueno introduced Cecilia to her husband by picture. After a 3 month-long courtship, Cecilia Gonzales Ong married John Gabot Bulosan in May 1958. They established their lives in San Francisco's Haight Ashbury district, where they lived together for over 30 years and raised their three sons. As a self-described "jack of all trades", Cecilia happily found employment in various establishments around the city, such as a busy coffee shop near the San Francisco Zoo and for Solo, a clothing manufacturing company. In 1957, Cecilia accepted Jesus as her personal savior in Vancouver, Canada. Upon arriving in San Francisco in 1958, Cecilia joined First Baptist Church of San Francisco where she was a member for 63 years. She was an active member of the Filipino Bible Community Group. She was a very friendly face making newcomers feel welcomed. Later in her adult years, Cecilia became a part of the Canon Kip Senior Center, the only senior center in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood that serves at-risk, un-housed seniors, and adults with disabilities. Cecilia's passion to serve others was in no doubt, demonstrated here, where she was proudly elected as President for multiple terms, organized year round events and workshops, hosted luncheons, and even called Bingo! While she thoroughly enjoyed entertaining and socializing, Cecilia equally appreciated her quiet and alone time-when she could pray, finish another word search puzzle, lovingly re-organized her photo albums, and watch her must-see evening shows; Family Feud and Wheel of Fortune. Cecilia Ong Bulosan peacefully left our world on December 20th, 2021 at the age of 88. She was a devoted wife, mother, Lola, sister, and friend. She is predeceased by her loving husband, John in 1993. She is survived by her three sons- Jay, Butch (Sandy), and Joey; eight grandchildren-Cherise, Christopher, Reneé, Jerome John Jr., Alyssa, Chelsea, Alina, and Mateo; two great-grandchildren- Damien and Kenzo; and nine siblings-Agnes, Van, Annie, Olga, Vilma, Oscar, Lutchie, Jean, and Lorna.
