She was the paternal grandchild of sea captain and merchant, Christopher Clark of England who immigrated to the American Colonies about 1760, settling in Edenton, Chowan Co, where he married (2nd) Hannah Turner of Bertie Co. The couple later removed to Bertie where Clark established "Elmwood" Plantation She was the maternal grandchild of early Tarboro settler, Henry Irwin Toole and his wife, Elizabeth Haywood.
Maria married Scottish immigrant and merchant, Matthew Weddell (Waddell), who became a merchant and banker in Tarboro. No date of marriage has been found, but it is believed they married around 1840. The marriage was childless.
Matthew Weddell was born in Midlothian, Scotland, son of Archibald Weddell (Waddell) & Henrietta Laurie, and together with his older brother, James, immigrated to America. It is believed they first settled around Petersburg or Richmond, VA and later came to Tarboro sometime around 1840.
Maria died in 1859 at age 46.
Her husband married (2nd) to Mary M. Norcom in 1862, and by her had 4 known children: John Archibald (1863), Laurie (c. 1866), Rush N. (c. 1868), and Maria (c. 1871). Matthew Weddell married for the (3rd) time to Francis L. ca. 1880.
Matthew Weddell is credited with building the now historic, "Weddell House" at 411 E. Wilson Street, built ca. 1869, one of the best examples of Carpenter Gothic style in the area.

According to the October 23, 1852 edition of the Southerner newspaper, "Matthew Weddell of New York City married Maria T. Clark, daughter of the late James W. Clark, in Calvary Church at Tarboro on October 20, 1852, by the Rev. J. B. Cheshire."
